Organization for Rural Development (ORD) was formed in 1990 and is a secular non-governmental organization. It aims at bringing about a change in the living standards of Rural Poor especially women and children. It has taken the motto 'TO EDUCATE and EQUIP RURAL POOR', and so it mainly focuses on women, children, landless laborers of poorest of the poor and Tribal communities who are known as Dalits. And it strongly believes in People's strength and capacity to facilitate their process of development. It respects people's knowledge. Hence, ORD's approaches begin with people and end with people.

ORD's Vision

To Join hands with poorest of the poor in order to work for an alternative society in which there is Justice, equitable sharing of resources, no discrimination or exploitation people live in dignity and environment is nurtured.

ORD's Mission

Our Mission is to bring about Unity among Poorest of the poor section of the society to build up human and material resource and further enhancement of Social Capital through forming people's organization by

  • 1. Establishing good rapport with people,
  • 2. Organizing different sections (women, children, landless laborers etc.,) of the poorest of the poor communities into association,
  • 3. Disseminating information,
  • 4. Training and
  • 5. Promoting sustainable, Eco-friendly and participatory development approaches.

ORD's Activities

In order to achieve our objectives, we do following activities.

  • 1. Organizing different groups (women,children,landless laborers of plains and Tribal) into associations at village level and cluster level
  • 2. Promote habit of saving among women and form Saving groups in order to help themselves to meet emergency expense,
  • 3. Train women, children, youth and landless laborers to actively participate in the development of their own village
  • 4. Disseminate necessary information through Seminars, Cultural Melas and Pamphlets and posters
  • 5. Impart Life Based Education for rural children
  • 6. Provide needed service to orphan and street children and senior citizens
  • 7. Net working with other like- mined NGOs in order to propogate our approaches as well as to learn from them
  • 8. Capacitating ORD's Staff through In-house training programs for effective implementation of above activities and
  • 9. Constant evaluation of ORD's performance in the field.

ORD's Structure

It has a Executive Body consisting of 7 members who are committed for the cause of the poor. ORD's Staff are highly motivated, young and energetic. They are committed and work hard in order to achieve the aims and objectives of ORD.

The major support for ORD comes from people with whom it works, Philanthropist in and outside India, Anitra Trust Chennai and SCIAF-Scotland.
